 Benfica Blog

The buzz around Joao Mario's omission from the game day squad has raised eyebrows and rumours are now intensifying that the midfielder will depart the club before the transfer window closes with reports of a host of Saudi and M.L.S. clubs interested in the 31 year old's services.

The atmosphere from Benfica fans last game at Joao Mario's substitution did not sit well with the midfielder who received whistles and boos from the stands. Mario was completely bothered as he did not appear post match to celebrate the club's Week 2 victory.

With whispers that Saudi, M.L.S and Turkish clubs all showing interest in Joao Mario, the midfielder may be looking at one final big pay day before calling it a career. The Benfica vice-captain looks to be at a crossroads in his career and with the transfer window closing shortly. The club is listening to offers.

Joao Mario joined Benfica in the summer of 2021 from Inter Milan and has appeared in 149 games for Benfica across all competitions, scoring 36 goals while providing 26 assists. He has captured the Portuguese League title and Super Cup while a member of the squad.
